November 3: I'm Thankful For . . .

The mail.

E-mail is great ~ I couldn't imagine life without it now ~ but there's just something so exciting about checking the mailbox every day to see what good things might be waiting inside. Sure, there are bills and junky circulars and catalogs for things we don't even want, but sometimes there's a letter from a friend, or a new issue of a favorite magazine, or an eagerly awaited paycheck - what a tradeoff!

And my hat is off to postal carriers! These men and women are out there walking their route in bitter cold, stifling heat, and drenching rain, and they have to contend with unpredictable dogs and weird people (go ahead, ask a postal carrier to tell you his or her war stories).

It may seem quaint, and it's much maligned in this day of insta-communication, but I am so grateful for the mail. I just love the idea of sticking a stamp on an envelope and knowing that in about a week, it can pass from my hand ~ through many others ~ into that of someone who lives on the other side of the country, or the world. And for less than the price of a cup of coffee. Plain coffee.
