November 6: I'm Thankful For . . .

Coffee.

Coffee - what would I do without you? I can hardly think of waking up in the morning without a cup of steaming black coffee to look forward to. It's not that I'm addicted to caffeine - in fact, I'm one of those people who can down a 12-ounce mug of joe fifteen minutes before bedtime, shut off the light, and fall asleep before my head even hits the pillow. I don't need coffee to get going in the morning, but oh how I desire it.

I recently discovered the delay-brew feature on my coffeemaker, and now we wake each day to the scent of brewing coffee, the gentle burble of black gold filling the carafe ~ way on the other end of the house ~ a more compelling call to wakefulness than the screaming clamor of my clock radio.

I take my coffee black, no sugar, and just hot enough to sip, not slurp or gulp. Going downstairs to my desk, whether it's early in the morning or late at night, I can face my gauntlet of deadlines a little more assiduously with the calming influence of that cup warm against my palm.

I'm grateful for those who are involved in the tedious, labor-intensive work of harvesting, curing, roasting, shipping, packaging, and selling my precious coffee so that I can enjoy this singular comfort every day. It's a blessing I sometimes do take for granted, but when I am forced to go without it for some reason, it is suddenly huge in my mind. I start to feel a little panicky if we're running low in the canister.

Coffee ~ the elixir of life.

What are you thankful for today?

Comments

  1. Even though I've weaned myself from coffee to green tea for the most part, I still need a good strong cuppa every now and then (this morning is a perfect example).

I think this series of 'thankfuls' is a wonderful thing and I love reading them every day. It makes me consider what I'm thankful for, despite all the negative things I see during the day. Thank YOU for writing it all out.

  2. I take my coffee black, too, and I'm thankful for this pick-me-up every single day! I like mine in latte form, however. This is a great theme!
